Tadelakt - Moroccan Styled Lime Plaster Installer London
The Ancient Art of Tadelakt in London
A centuries-old Moroccan plaster, made highly water-resistant through traditional saponification chemistry. Seamless, luminous, and breathable — one of the most distinctive luxury finishes for bathrooms, wet rooms, and feature walls.
What Is Tadelakt?
Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan lime plaster originating from Marrakech, used for centuries in hammams (bathhouses) and riads. Composed of aged slaked lime and fine marble powder, it is applied by hand in multiple layers and polished with a smooth river stone to create a seamless, luminous surface with a soft, organic warmth that is difficult to replicate with synthetic materials.
A key stage in the process is a chemical reaction known as saponification. Traditional olive oil soap is worked into the burnished lime surface, where the fatty acids react with the calcium hydroxide in the lime to form calcium stearate — an insoluble, water-repellent compound that enhances the finish’s resistance to moisture. Unlike many surface-applied sealers or coatings, these water-resistant properties are created through the chemistry of the finish itself rather than relying solely on a separate protective layer.
We exclusively use Stucco Italiano Tadelakt — a premium Italian-manufactured lime plaster formulated with aged slaked lime and selected marble powders. With a grain size of 700 microns, VOC emissions of less than 1 g/l, and a Class A1 fire rating, it represents one of the highest-quality Tadelakt systems available in the UK.

Why Designers & Architects Specify Tadelakt
A finish rooted in over a thousand years of Moroccan architectural tradition — valued by designers and architects for its unique combination of moisture resistance, breathability, and timeless organic beauty.
Naturally Water-Resistant
Tadelakt derives its water-resistant properties through a traditional process known as saponification, where natural olive oil soap reacts with the lime surface to create a durable, water-repellent finish. Unlike many systems that rely on synthetic sealers, epoxy coatings, or polymer membranes, this protection is created within the surface itself.
Breathable & Moisture-Regulating
Natural lime actively regulates humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture vapour — preventing the condensation that causes mould and mildew. Unlike tiled surfaces that trap moisture behind grout, Tadelakt allows walls to breathe, creating a healthier bathroom environment.
Seamless & Organic
No grout lines, no tile joints, no visual interruptions. Tadelakt creates a continuous, undulating surface with a soft, hand-crafted texture and gentle movement. Every surface is unique — shaped by the artisan’s hand and the natural behaviour of lime.
Non-Toxic & Eco-Friendly
With less than 1 g/l VOC emissions, Tadelakt is among the lowest-VOC decorative wall finishes available. Its composition is entirely natural — aged slaked lime, marble powder, and olive oil soap. No petrochemicals, no synthetic resins, no solvents. Safe for families and the environment.
Ages Beautifully
Unlike paint or synthetic coatings that deteriorate over time, Tadelakt develops a rich, living patina as it matures. The surface deepens in character, becoming more beautiful with age — much like natural stone, leather, or fine wood. It’s a finish that improves, not degrades.
Timeless Aesthetic
Rooted in over 1,000 years of Moroccan architectural tradition, Tadelakt transcends trends. Its warmth and organic quality complement both contemporary minimalism and classical luxury — creating spaces with an enduring sense of warmth and permanence.
What it is
Water becomes part of the craft.
Tadelakt is a layered lime plaster, compressed smooth until the surface tightens to a soft sheen, then sealed with black olive soap.
It is the polishing and soap treatment that help create the water-resistant surface for which Tadelakt is known. The same method that has lined Moroccan hammams for centuries, now shaped for showers, basins and feature walls.
