What Is Tadelakt?

Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan lime plaster originating from Marrakech, used for centuries in hammams (bathhouses) and riads. Composed of aged slaked lime and fine marble powder, it is applied by hand in multiple layers and polished with a smooth river stone to create a seamless, luminous surface with a soft, organic warmth that is difficult to replicate with synthetic materials.

A key stage in the process is a chemical reaction known as saponification. Traditional olive oil soap is worked into the burnished lime surface, where the fatty acids react with the calcium hydroxide in the lime to form calcium stearate — an insoluble, water-repellent compound that enhances the finish’s resistance to moisture. Unlike many surface-applied sealers or coatings, these water-resistant properties are created through the chemistry of the finish itself rather than relying solely on a separate protective layer.

We exclusively use Stucco Italiano Tadelakt — a premium Italian-manufactured lime plaster formulated with aged slaked lime and selected marble powders. With a grain size of 700 microns, VOC emissions of less than 1 g/l, and a Class A1 fire rating, it represents one of the highest-quality Tadelakt systems available in the UK.

Yes. Tadelakt is widely used on shower walls, wet room walls, bathrooms, and other areas exposed to moisture. When correctly installed and maintained, it performs exceptionally well in these environments while providing a seamless, natural aesthetic. However, we do not generally recommend Tadelakt for shower floors. The polished surface can become slippery when wet, and floor surfaces are subjected to significantly greater abrasion and wear than walls. For shower floors, we typically recommend Forcrete Microcement, which provides a durable, seamless surface specifically suited to floor applications. Many clients choose Tadelakt on the walls and microcement on the floor to create a cohesive, contemporary wet room design.

Professional Tadelakt installation typically costs between £120–£200 per m², depending on the size of the area, substrate condition, colour specification, and complexity of the project. Smaller, more intricate spaces — such as niches, curved surfaces, or multi-angled shower enclosures — generally sit at the higher end of the range, while larger, straightforward wall areas tend to be more cost-effective per square metre. This typically includes materials, surface preparation, multi-layer application, stone polishing, saponification, and aftercare guidance. While both Tadelakt and microcement create seamless surfaces suitable for contemporary interiors, they are fundamentally different materials with distinct characteristics. Tadelakt is a traditional lime-based plaster finished using a soap and polishing process that enhances its resistance to moisture.
